LASG ORGANISES WORKSHOP ON PENSIONS LAW, URGES PROMPT REMITTANCE OF WORKERS' CONTRIBUTIONS

CAPTION: (L-R) Permanent Secretary, Parastatals Monitoring Office, Dr. A. Y. Jimoh; Director-General, LASPEC, Mr. Babalola Obilana; Permanent Secretary, Office of Establishments & Training, Dr. Abiodun Onayele; Permanent Secretary, Local Government Establishments, Training and Pensions, Mr. Abiodun Bamgboye and Permanent Secretary, Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Boladele Dapo-Thomas at the sensitisation workshop organised for CEOs/DFAs of parastatals on Lagos State Pension Law Administration 2007 at LCCI, Ikeja Business District recently

The Lagos State Civil Service Pensions Office, in collaboration with Parastatals Monitoring Office, recently organised a workshop to sensitise the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Directors of Finance & Accounts (DFAs) on the 2007 Pensions’ Law as it applies to their responsibilities on remittance of deductions of workers' contributions.

In her address during the workshop, the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Mrs. Ajibola Ponnle, stated that the Government had contended with unending requests for bailouts on payment of Pensions and Gratuities of retirees from parastatals.

The Commissioner, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Abiodun Onayele, stressed that the issue of delayed remittance persisted despite full payment of subventions to agencies. He maintained that parastatals are expected to deduct workers' contributions and credit their pension accounts in accordance with the Pensions’ Law of 2007.

Mrs. Ponnle said the non-issuance of bonds to retirees years after retirement has become worrisome and embarrassing to the State Government because the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu gives priority to matters affecting pensioners.

She stated that the sensitisation workshop was designed to explain the implications of default by the Agencies and ensure that, henceforth, all payments are made promptly, declaring that ignorance is not an excuse for breaking the law.

Imploring all parastatals to be alive to their responsibilities in respect of remittance of pension contributions of employees, the Commissioner urged the Chief Executives and Directors of Finance and Accounts to ensure remittance of deductions in accordance with the Pension Law of 2007.
