NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA, IKORODU WEST LOCAL BRANCH

FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

Background

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ikorodu West Local branch is empowered by the National Youth Policy and Lagos State Youth Policy as the voice of the youths being the umbrella body of all legally recognised youth organisations.

Its assignment expands to youth welfarism including advocating for youth rights and privileges.

Over the last few years, youth inclusion in governance has been public outcry including youth organisations asking for the amendment of electoral laws that are discriminatory in nature. The *#NotTooYoungToRun* bill was birthed, passed by the National Assembly and signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The passage of the bill is a beginning of a journey of the will to encourage young people to hold the future in their hands today. Of course, the future is indefinite. It is finite when the future is pictured today.

In spite of this, the passage of the bill may have been a skeletal operation without the youth themselves throwing their hat in the ring and without having an enabling environment to compete favourably and shoulder to shoulder.

While the Lagos State local government election approaches, it is noteworthy that the APC and some other political parties have slashed its form by 50% for young aspirant. This in itself is more than enough to show the will of those parties to embrace young aspirants.

It is unfortunate that not so much young people in Ikorodu West has taken the bull by the horn. We admit that we may have not done enough to encourage our youths on this task. However, today, we choose to stand in solidarity with the few ones who have chosen to take bold step.

The purpose of this press release is to declare total support to all young aspirants in Ikorodu West LCDA. In as much as the number is slim, and while we would not want to mention names of candidates, we call on the entire youths in Ikorodu West LCDA to ensure that their votes during primaries goes only to a youth aspirant.

Sadly, we note with concerns, the absent of a young Chairmanship aspirant, albiet this is sad, however, we enjoin the youths to look critically into the manifesto of all the aspirants and vote only aspirants with genuine plans for the youths. Our ultimate goal is to have people in elective position who will not be hostile to youth plights.

For clarity, the National Youth Policy identifies a youth as person between the ages of 15 - 35 and this is the aspirants we referred to as youth in this press release. The youths are also welcome to support people about 5 years older than this age which is 35 - 40. This is necessary since there are few aspirants in the net of 15 - 35.

We use this opportunity to call on political party leaders, Youth Leaders of all political parties and all stake holders that this is an avenue for youth inclusion in governance especially at the grassroot.

We enjoin all our youths in all political parties to immediately work with any aspirants that meet up with this criteria in their individual capacity.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ikorodu West Local branch as an umbrella body for all political, religious and uniform youth organizations will continue to stand tall in advocating for the right of youths at all time.

Thanks you and God bless.
